Family owned and operated, Mike & Sons is an automotive-specific machine shop, focusing on engine rebuilds for everything from daily grocery getters to classic cars and performance work.

Machinist Chris Palumbo told us that as a family operation, every engine they work on they treat with care as if it were there own personal engine. To get the quality of work they demand, Chris and his father-in-law, Mike Garcia, rely on a quartet of Rottler machines including an SG9 seat & guide machine, an HP6A (precursor to the H85AX) hone, an EM69ATC engine machining center, and a classic Rottler F2.

Chris tells us he needs precision to maintain modern standards and the EM69ATC delivers. It has “endless capabilities,” he said.

On this episode of Rottler Featured Series join us at East Holmes Auto Repair and Holmes Performance and Machine in Millersburg, Ohio.

Co-owners Steve Troyer and Casey Butler founded East Holmes in 2016. Today they’re a full service automotive performance and industrial machine shop with a particular focus on work trucks and fleet vehicles.

Knowing that many of their customer depend on the vehicles and equipment to get their work done, East Holmes puts attention to detail on everything they send out the door. “We want to give our customers peace of mind,” Troyer said.

As part of that dedication to quality, one of East Holmes’ first investments was in an H85AX automatic hone. A short time later they added an EM79 engine machining center that gives them the ability to machine everything from a 4 cylinder block all the way up to Cat C15s, Detroits, and even bigger blocks.

“Often times there’s promises made but not promises kept. That’s not true with Rottler,” Troyer told us. “If they say they’re going to do it, they do it.”

“And its not just the machines, it’s the relationships we’ve made with other people in this industry through Rottler. That’s just been huge,” Butler added.

For this Episode of Rottler Featured Series we’re in Palm City, Florida to see Bill Dicondina, Owner of Xtreme Cylinder Heads.

Xtreme Cylinder Heads specializes in Porsche cylinder heads: Race heads, Turbo head, exact replicas of OEM heads — all built to the most exacting standards.

Dicondina tells us that his Rottler equipment is critical to his business and is used in everything from raw castings to port work. He’s even had his 69ATC series machines upgraded to double the size of the tool changers and add a 4th axis.

“Instead of 25 hours to port a set of heads, it only takes 4 with the Rottler equipment,” head said. “That frees us to do other work.”

Not surprisingly, while Xtreme made a name for itself on manufacturing and rebuilding Porsche 911 heads, word of the superior quality of their work has spread. Now they’re now also expanding into Toyota Supra, and vintage restoration work for Lamborghini, and Ferrari work as well.

No matter what the job, Dicondina tells us they remain focused perfecting the smallest of details to deliver the best results and experience for their customers.

“Since I opened this shop in 1999, we always strive for absolute perfection,” Dicondina said. “I can’t say enough about Rottler and how they’ve changed our business.”

On this episode of Rottler Featured Series, join us at one of America’s premier auto racing engine building, rebuilding, testing, design and development facilities, Ed Pink Racing Engines in Van Nuys, California.

EPRE conducts engine design and development on a large variety of engines. Recent projects include a 2 valve 4 cylinder 2.7-liter methanol fueled racing engine and 4 valve engines developed for off road truck racing.

Other engine projects at EPRE vary from the rebuilding and updating of 900 hp turbocharged race engine for GTP vintage racing, Cosworth DF Formula One and Indy engines, and Cosworth XD Indy engine for vintage racing. They’ve also done the design evaluation of a motorcycle engine and contributed to the development of road racing engines for use in South America.

To get all this work done, EPRE depends in a trio of Rottler machines, including an S7M surfacer (now the S85 series), an F67A CNC (now the F69A), and an EM69HP CNC Engine Machining center. According to head machinist Gianni Jeong, these machines have allowed them to double their weekly output while producing work that meets, and often exceeds, manufacturer specs.

Rottler Equipment in the Shop

For this episode of Rottler Featured Series, we’re in Bellingham, Washington at LKQ Remanufacturing, part of the LKQ Corporation family. LKQ is a global leader providing alternative aftermarket, specialty salvage and recycled auto parts and services to repair and accessorize vehicles.

Speaking with Production Manager, Anthony Coomes, we learned the suite of Rottler machines on his factory floor are key to reducing labor costs while improving quality and efficiency.

LKQ has a dozen of our systems in his operation running the gamut from valve refacers, surfacers and seat cutters, to our H85AXY hones, and the F69A multi-purpose CNC for boring and surfacing.

Coomes told us that he really likes his Rottler lineup because they’re easy to learn, accurate, and one person can run several machines simultaneously, which keeps his costs under control and ensures top notch work product.

For our part, we’re pleased to be working with LKQ because of their commitment to sustainability and practices that renew and extend the life of key automotive components, keeping them on the road and out of the landfill.

In engine remanufacturing the amount of material left in the cylinder head or engine block directly impacts the engines longevity and strength. Critical tolerances such as deck height can make or break an engine. Removing the least amount of material required is not only preferable, but it’s a necessity with modern engines especially those with overhead cam designs.

Typically when approaching a minimum material cleanup on a block you program your CNC machine with two sets of parameters—an initial roughing set following by a finishing set. However, because each block varies based on the life that it’s lived, you may need to take more or less material from the block to reach an ideal condition.

You could adjust the entire program for each block, or simply complete the process manually, but Rottler offers an easier, less time consuming, and more precise method.

Rottler’s software features a unique auto cycle function called “Additional Depth.” This function skips the cutting and roughing passes and runs just the finishing parameter, allowing you to remove a specific amount of material quickly and accurately.

The function is particularly useful when dealing with the variability of a block where you’re not entirely certain how much material you need to remove because it allows you to remove just a little material at a time.

The Additional Depth milling cycle is available across Rottler’s CNC machining center product line and makes performing minimum material cleanups a breeze.

R&L Engines is a 6,000 square foot state of the art engine rebuilding and machining facility that works on everything from vintage engines to high performance auto and marine motors.

Owner Leo Crossetier started R&L back in 1981 and later invested in his line-up of Rottler equipment because he got too busy and could no longer stand in front of a machine for hours a day. These days Leo and team have an assortment of specialized machining and fixtures, including the Rottler F69A Multi-purpose CNC, H85AX automatic hone, and SG9MTS seat & guide machine, that allow R&L to do high performance engine blueprinting that produces results far superior than the original manufacturers.

Leo’s team told us what they like the most about their Rottlers is that the machinery makes even the most difficult and time-consuming jobs accurate, repeatable and easy.

“Rottler machines do exactly what they should every time,” Leo said.
