MANUALMATIC ACTIVE SPINDLE Cylinder Head Valve Seat and Guide Machine Utilizing UNIPILOT Carbide Centering Pilots
The SG9MTS uses the proven patented UNIPILOT tooling system.The machine have 2 modes of operation:
MANUALMATIC – a brand new concept has been added to these machines which should increase productivity by 30-50%. During seat cutting, the operator does not have to operate any buttons or switches, simply turn the spindle feed steering wheel up and down and the control takes care of all the functions like workhead float/clamp, pilot centering in the valve guide and spindle on/off. When depth of seat is reached, the control automatically changes spindle RPM to high/finish speed to give equal depth of every seat and consistent surface finish results.
MANUAL – the buttons on touch screen are the same as the previous SGM machines. There is no external dial gauge, the spindle vertical position is displayed on the touch screen. Simply feed the spindle down until the cutting insert touches the valve seat, touch set zero button and then the digital display will show exactly where the spindle is at all times. The change from low to high/finishing speed is easier as there are 2 separate buttons. The foot pedal for clamp and float of workhead has been eliminated and now controlled on touch screen for manual and automatically for MANUALMATIC.
The Rottler SG9MTS spindle is mounted on a sphere which allows the UNIPILOT to automatically center with the valve guide centerline while the Workhead is floating on air cushions. Once air floating stops and the Workhead clamps, the UNIPILOT and valve guide centerline are maintained while cutting the valve seat.

Multi Angle Seat Cutting – Rottler’s Precision CNC Ground Fine Grain Carbide Seat Cutting Inserts are available in many different designs to suit customer requirements. Single angle, multi angle or curves and radius shapes are available.
Cutting tools are substantially faster and less expensive than grinding, where a different grinding stone is required for each angle.
Storage Cabinet – Three Drawers and Top Tray allows convenient storage of wide selection of tooling available from Rottler.
Built in Vacuum Tester – For quick checking of valve seats before removing the cylinder head.
360 Degree Rollover Fixture – Provides quick loading and easy access to all sides of the head. Quickly levels head using the micro adjust feature. Clamps onto table firmly for chatter free cutting with extremely accurate concentricity centered by a pedal. Fixture floats on an air cushion for quick, easy setup with both hands. (Optional)
Rigid Machine Construction – Heavy thick wall cast iron machine castings and precision machining during the manufacturing process give excellent chatter free valve seat cutting. Heavy duty cabinet/base extended to the rear for safe handling when machine has to be moved. Recessed toe kick allows more comfortable machine operation.
Light Weight Workhead – The SG9 has a light weight workhead for fast and accurate centering for the minimum concentricity. At the same time, the workhead is heavy duty capable of machining large diameter valve seats.
Spindle Alignment – Pneumatic system controlled by switch aligns spindle vertically to allow UNIPILOT to easily enter valve guide.
Variable Speed Spindle – from 40 to 400 rpm Accurately select specific spindle speeds required for different machining operations. Soft touch buttons and bright digital display allow ease of operation.
Electronic Level – Digital readout for quick, accurate adjustment.
Adjustable Depth Stop
15 Degree Tilt – Spindle tilts up to 15 degrees from vertical in both directions, providing quick alignment on all canted valve cylinder heads. Cuts each seat to the exact same depth – a must for today’s computer controlled engines.
Automatic Spindle Lock Nut – Patented Spindle Locking Nut system offers automatic tightening of tools in spindle. Won’t come loose when cutting. One hand operation pushes tool up and spindle lock nut tightens automatically, ejects tool when loosened.
Large Diameter Spindle – 3.150 inch (80mm) diameter heavy duty spindle assures rigidity for chatter free operation. Outer spindle support bearings are adjustable over the whole length of the bearing area, similar to High Precision Boring Bar design giving decades of use.

The Rottler SG10XY ACTIV spindle is mounted on a sphere which allows the UNIPILOT to automatically center with the valve guide centerline while the Workhead is floating on air cushions. Once air floating stops and the Workhead clamps, the UNIPILOT and valve guide centerline are maintained while cutting the valve seat.

The SG10XY has the latest design ACTIV Spindle which has a sphere built inside the spindle which compensates for any misalignment and allows the UNIPILOT tooling system to automatically center with reference to the valve guide centerline while the workhead is floating on air cushions. Once the floating stops and the workhead clamps, the UNIPILOT and valve guide centerline are maintained while the valve seat is cut giving excellent CONCEN. When performing machining operations other than valve seat cutting such as valve seat housing counterboring and valve guide reaming, the spindle is required to be locked vertically. The ACTIV spindle has a pneumatic locking system that locks the spindle sphere rigidly vertically for other types of machining requirements.
Automatic Guide-to-Guide — The SG10XY is engeineered to have a very light workhead that floats independently on a base plate allowing precise centering of the pilot in the valve guide. The base plate moves the workhead from guide-to-guide by a precision ball screw and servo motor. The complete assembly clamps with air pressure for rigid machining.
Quick X Axis Alignment System (Patent Pending) — This feature is the secret to productive guide-to-guide automatic machining! After the cylinder head is clamped in the fixture, 2 pilots are installed in the outer valve guides and 2 the alignments arms are moved on linear slideways inline with the 2 pilots, at this stage, the complete fixture assembly floats on air and the 2 pilots contact the 2 alignment arms which aligns the valve guides with the X axis movement of the workhead. At this stage, the fixture clamps on the machine table, the 2 pilots are removed and the cylinder head is ready for automatic guide-to-guide machining.
Variable Speed Servo Spindle Drive — CNC Servo Spindle Motor Drive controls the final speed and number of revolutions then lifts automatically giving perfect surface finish results – every time!

Heavy Duty Cylinder Head Valve Seat and Guide Machine
The SG100A was created specifically for machine shops that rebuild small to large cylinder heads found in the heavy duty engine industry.
Large cylinder heads come in many shapes and sizes, from 24 valve single casting cylinder heads to huge single cylinder heads used in natural gas, mining and marine workboat engines. We put our trusted engine block machining technology to work designing a heavy duty machine that handles many operations required on a wide variety of cylinder heads.
At Rottler we believed that many large cylinder heads could be “plunge cut” with fixed tooling to save time and money. We realized that plunge cutting would require a very rigid machine utilizing many of our already established design features such as Rottler’s exclusive spindle design. Over the decades, Rottler’s spindle design has proven that our engine block machines are able to “plunge cut” wide counterbores found in large engine blocks with exceptional results. We used this spindle design for the SG90A and it has since been proven, in over 50 machines, that the SG90A is capable of plunge cutting large valve seats very quickly and with excellent CONCEN and surface finish.
SG100A Features
Proven Rottler Spindle Design — The large diameter precision spindle nut has an R40 taper with the Quick Change Self Locking Spindle Nut System. Tooling never comes loose and no wrenches are required to change tools. Rottlers unique Heavy Duty tooling allows large and wide Valve Seats to be machined to accurate Concentricity. Solid Carbide Pilots offer maximum rigidity and long life for years of precision machine work.
Touch Screen Control Technology — The SG100A features a Conversational Touch Screen Control that allows the operator to program the machine to cut at certain RPM with a specific feed rate. This eliminates chatter when cutting hard valve seats by eliminating the human error of the operator truing to feel the cutting action. See controls for more information.
UNIPILOT Tooling — The UNIPILOT tooling system allows the carbide centralizing UNIPILOT to work like a live pilot. It stays in the spindle while moving from valve guide to valve guide, but all at the same time has a fixed pilot design to give improved concen. See brochure for more information.
360 Degree Roll Over Fixture — Rottler’s 360 Degree Roll Over Fixture comes standard on the SG100A. The fixture allows large 24 valve cylinder heads to be clamped with reference to their head gasket fire deck and rolled 360 degrees in one set up. The heavy duty clamping and fine adjust system allow quick leveling and rigid clamping for heavy cutting during machining. (Optional)
Adjustable Air Float and Air Clamp Work Table — The large worktable of the SG100A consists of two 68″ (1730mm) long parallels that are mounted on an air floating and air clamping base. These extra long T-slot parallels allow a wide variety of fixtures and jobs to be set up for machining. The complete table and fixture assembly is easily adjusted in/out with air float and locked rigidly with air clamping allowing cylinder heads with four valves per cylinder to be adjusted in/out and machined without resetting of the cylinder head in the fixture. Just press the foot pedal to float the table, slide in or out and the table locks in position ready for machining.

ACTIV SPINDLE Programmable Automatic Large Capacity Valve Guide-to-Guide Cylinder Head Machining Center
There are two common designs for diesel cylinder heads: large (huge) castings for 6 cylinder inline engines with 24 valves, and single-cylinder heads, each with 4 valves (such as found on the CAT 3500).
The single cylinder heads are the biggest challenge! Most seat and guide machines can only handle one single head at a time, requiring the operator to load, clamp, machine intake seats, change tooling, machine exhaust seats and then unload the completed head before loading the next head. A tremendous amount of time is wasted. Operator fatigue becomes a real concern as the operator has to spend so much time just loading and unloading, and not getting the critical machine work done of cutting valve seats and honing valve guides.
Rottler has developed fixtures that allow easy loading of four single heads, clamping all four at once with a single button.
The fixture is designed to accommodate different height heads as often heads being remanufactured have been worked on before and are not equal thickness and also may not be parallel. After the heads are clamped, the SG100XY is able to machine all the intake seats unattended and after a quick tool change, the software automatically changes the program to cut all the exhaust seats unattended.
For the large 24 valve castings, Rottler has developed a servo-controlled 360-degree rollover fixture with power clamping. Easy and fast to set up, these huge castings can be rotated 360 degrees and leveled for many operations such as valve guide and spring seat repairs, injector tube repairs and even drilling out broken studs on the exhaust manifold surface on the side of the heads.

SSV Spindle Speed Variation — Rottler has developed special spindle motor control technology to vary the spindle speed while finish cutting the valve seat. SSV varies the spindle speed to specified speeds and controls the time of acceleration and deceleration in micro seconds giving improved surface finish for perfect CONCEN and vacuum seal.
Windows Touch Screen Control — Windows based touch screen control is easy to use for automatic hole to hole operation without requiring complex CNC programming.
